The cassava journey

WindWood Millers Limited was conceptualized in 2000 and has humble beginnings as a rice farm in Kole district. As the concept picked up, the company was formally registered with the government of Uganda, 9 years later. On 18th August 2009, the organization was established by Mr Ivan Okori (RIP). WindWood Millers Limited is a privately owned limited liability company located in Lira Municipality, northern Uganda. In 2015, after years of acting as a trader in rice and cassava flour, the company began the setup and installation of a state of the art factory in Industrial Area, Lira. From which it built the capacity to instantly purchase and dry High Quality Cassava starch Flour (HQCF). In late 2017, the factory setup was completed and full processing operations commenced. With the set up of a modern cassava processing factory using modern flash drying technology in Lira, the company is able to process and market 3.5 -7.0 metric tons of HQCF per day.

Cassava Adding Value (CAVA)

The company has worked extensively with AfrII’s Cassava Adding Value project (CAVA) in Northern and Eastern Uganda on HQCF for industrial use. WindWood Millers has also planted more than 100 acres of cassava and set up a network of over 400 smallholder contract cassava farmers who produce and sell fresh cassava roots (FCRs) to the factory.

WindWood Millers Ltd purchases FCRs from a network of about 10,500 rural smallholder farmers and 9 cooperatives (many of whom are young male and female farmers) from Lango, Acholi, Bunyoro, Teso subregions and Abim in Karamoja. It also sources fresh cassava roots from Nakasongola and Nakaseke districts and is planning to extend its networks to Nebbi and other parts of the West Nile Subregion. The company processes the FCRs into various products for the needs of different markets in the country and abroad. It intends to boost its raw materials supply, expand its processing capacity and access wider markets for its innovative products.

Windwood Millers
WindWood Flour is a gluten-free, wheat flour alternative that is made by grating  and drying the fibrous cassava root (yuca) and non-allergenic. It is gluten-free,  grain-free and nut-free; low in calories, fat and sugar; and inexpensive. It’s one of the most valuable sources of nutrition for more than 500 million people living in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
